Pool Acid Wash Cost in Las Vegas and When You Actually Need One
An acid wash strips a thin layer off the plaster to take stains, algae roots, and surface scale with it. Done once every several years on a stained pool it is the right call. Done every spring because the water looked tired, it will cost you a resurfacing years early. In Las Vegas the acid wash question is tangled up with two other things, hard-water calcium and the drain it requires, so here is the whole picture.
What it usually means
- Grey or brown staining across the plaster: metals or organic stains that chemicals have not lifted. Classic acid wash job.
- Black algae spots rooted in the plaster: the acid opens the heads and kills the roots. Usually the only permanent fix.
- Rough, sandpaper feel on the whole surface: calcium scale from years of hard water. An acid wash helps, but if the roughness is deep the plaster is calcified through and a wash only buys time.
- Thick white band at the tile line: that is calcium on the tile, not the plaster. It is a bead blasting job and does not need the pool drained to the floor, only lowered below the tile.
- Pool was green for a long time: a chlorine wash, which uses liquid chlorine instead of acid on the drained pool, removes algae staining without taking off plaster. It is the gentler option and often enough.
What a technician will check
A tech will check plaster age and thickness (tap for hollow spots and look for exposed aggregate or rebar shadows), test calcium hardness, and decide between a chlorine wash, a light acid wash, or a stronger one. They will also confirm the pool can be drained safely: Las Vegas rules require draining to the sewer cleanout at no more than 12 gallons per minute, and the plaster should not sit empty in high heat. Most companies schedule acid washes from October through April for that reason and will tell you to wait if you call in July.
What it costs in Las Vegas
| Service | Las Vegas range |
|---|---|
| Acid wash, typical residential pool | $300 to $700 |
| Acid wash, large pool or heavy staining | up to $1,500 |
| Chlorine wash | $250 to $600 |
| No-drain or partial acid wash | about 60 to 70 percent of a full wash |
| Drain and refill labor (if not bundled) | $700 to $1,500 |
| Water to refill | $90 to $270 |
| Tile calcium cleaning (bead or soda blasting) | $5 to $8 per linear foot, $400 to $500 minimum |
These are Las Vegas ranges to judge a quote by, not a quote. Many local companies quote the acid wash and the drain as one package, so compare totals, not line items. Tile cleaning is priced by the foot of waterline, and a typical pool with spa runs 80 to 120 feet, which puts most jobs at $475 to $900. Glass tile and raised spa walls cost more because they take longer.
How often is too often
Plaster lasts roughly 10 to 15 years in Las Vegas, and each acid wash removes some of it. Once every 5 to 7 years is a reasonable ceiling. If a pool needs one every two years, the real problem is water chemistry, usually pH running high and calcium never being reset with a drain, and no amount of washing fixes that. A company that proposes an annual acid wash is selling you a resurfacing on the installment plan.
Can you do it yourself
No. An acid wash means standing in a drained pool with muriatic acid, a respirator, and a neutralizing plan for the runoff, and the timing on the plaster is a matter of minutes. Tile cleaning with a pumice stone on a small spa is doable; a whole waterline is a blasting job. The things you can do are the ones that avoid the wash: keep pH at 7.4 to 7.6, brush weekly, and plan a drain every 3 to 4 years to reset calcium before it scales.
